Modern Wood Window Sash Rebuild

Modern Wood Window Sash Rebuild

This Modern Wood window sash was brought to my wood shop for repair by a Seattle General Contractor. They first contacted me with some photos, and I was able to provide a kind of budget with what I thought would need to be done to rebuild the decay. The contractor removed the window and delivered to my shop, where I was able to assess the damage further. In most cases I like to provide a range of budget so there are expectations on what the cost could be. That way the contractor and communicate with their customer. In this case the customer had a lot of these wood windows from the late 80’s or early 90’s but the rest were doing well. As usual there were no new wood windows on the market that would come close to match, and there was no reason why they would replace all the windows just so they could all match when a craftsman like me could rebuild the existing one.

As you can see from the photos, the profiling is intense. I show one photo of the end profile so you can get an idea of just how may cuts need to be made. Also, modern windows are all built differently to each manufacturers proprietary milling design. So, each time I do this I need to set up my machines for each cut. It’s a step-by-step process where shaping needs to be done in a succession. It’s not easy, but it can be done as you can see. If you have a more modern home with wood windows many times the one or two that are rotten can be repaired or rebuilt, saving you purchasing windows that don’t match, or worse, paying the cost of replacing all your windows when it may not be needed! I’m happy to answer any questions you may have.
