This Seattle Historic Craftsman front porch was a total new rebuild. We replicated what would be a period look using period materials, but also employing modern methods. The deck is a traditional VG fir t&g flooring which slopes to shed moisture. The stairs are a vg fir 5/4″ tread, with clear dry smooth cedar riser. The stairs also slope to shed moisture and are glued and screwed as well as pre finished for protection.  All the posts are a clear dry smooth cedar that are a wrap with a 1/4″ inside corner detail at all outside corners. These were all pre measured, made and preassembled in our carpenter shop. The caps are made from fir blanks in our shop. I glued and clamped, then beveled the tops using a band saw, applied a router detail on the under edge, sanded up and pre primer with oil base.  The rail caps are a clear smooth 2×6 bevel cedar pre finished and secured with stainless steel nails. All the framing is pressure treated wood including the side wall plywood. The siding will be shingles, most framing and joinery are secured with either ceramic coated screws or stainless nails. Lastly, the upper post wraps at each corner are made the same as the rest of the wraps except that they have a taper from top to bottom.
