Wooden Caboose Historic Replication Millwork Project
One of my favorite ongoing projects is working with the owner and rebuilding this Historic Wooden 1909 Caboose. We started with rough framing and replacing a lot of beams in the undercarriage, and doing a lot of rough tie ins and mortice and tenon joinery. Here is a link to that work in a previous blog post on this website.
In this post it’s all about replicating the millwork on the exterior, including the fascia, window sash, window sills, and window jambs. Westbrook’s Snohomish wood shop has all the equipment needed to replicate unique millwork, which is an advantage for my clients that come from all over looking for quality craftsmanship. In the photos above you can seesaw much work it takes to architecturally replicate each piece. First I analyze each piece, and then I figure out which equipment I’ll use for the manufacturing process, as well as procuring the correct wood. Vertical grain fir was what was originally used and so it is here. Even the window sash profile matches the original. If you have any questions about Westbrook Carpentry and millwork feel free to contact Daniel Westbrook, and set up a time to visit the shop! Looking forward to hearing from you!
