Making these wood corbels in the shop here at Westbrook Carpentry & Millwork was simply a matter of the owner dropping off his specifications and wood he wanted to use. It wasn’t long before I had the final product for him to pick up.

A little comment about wood:
Normally I don’t really work with tight knot and I usually purchase all project material. Mostly because I like to be in control of grain pattern and wood qualities that work will with running through machines, and lay flat for glue ups. This wood was a little substandard for me because it had a lot of twisting and warps which made it somewhat challenging to work with for no real reason. Unless your a seasoned carpenter or woodworker, choosing the right material can be one of the most easily overlooked steps in the building process.

Once the wood is in the shop, it was a matter of setting up the band saw with a jig and blade that would make the radius cuts with the knee brace cradled firmly. This way I could make several consistent cuts quickly and precisely! Some prep was needed on the table saw, and some sanding was needed. For assembly I predrilled for installing long screws to hold it all together, all the while keeping the unit’s square.
